Know what you’re buying

Anatomy of a Turntable

Six parts decide how a deck sounds. Tap a marker — or a part below — to see what it does and why it matters.

The disc your record sits on. Mass is the whole trick: a heavier platter stores rotational energy and rides straight through the tiny drag changes a stylus creates, which is why speed stays locked.

◆ Heavier = steadier pitch

The pivoting tube carrying the cartridge across the record. It has to be rigid enough not to flex, light enough to follow warps, and balanced so the stylus sits in the groove at exactly the right force.

◆ Rigidity beats gadgetry

The only part that touches the music. A diamond tip traces the groove wall and a tiny magnet-and-coil turns that wiggle into voltage. Upgrading this changes the sound more than anything else you can bolt on.

◆ Biggest upgrade per pound

The body everything bolts to. Its job is boring and vital: absorb footfalls and speaker energy before they reach the stylus, which would otherwise hear them as rumble.

◆ Kills footfall rumble

Belt-drive hangs the platter off an elastic band so motor buzz never reaches the record. Direct-drive couples the motor underneath for instant start-up and pitch that will not drift.

◆ Belt = quiet · Direct = stable

Records are cut with the bass scooped out and treble boosted. The phono stage reverses that RIAA curve and lifts a whisper-level signal up to line level. Without it, vinyl sounds thin and far too quiet.

◆ Puts the bass back

Questions worth asking

The six things people ask us most before spending money on a deck.

+Belt-drive or direct-drive — which should I buy?
If you sit and listen, belt-drive: the rubber band stops motor vibration reaching the stylus, so the noise floor is lower. If you cue, scratch or want the platter at full speed the instant you hit start, direct-drive. Our bench data shows the gap has narrowed a lot — the best 12 direct-drive decks here measure wow & flutter as low as any belt deck.
+Do I need a separate phono preamp?
Only if nothing else in your chain has one. A turntable outputs a signal roughly 1,000× quieter than a CD player and with the bass deliberately cut. Something has to reverse that. Many decks here have a switchable preamp built in; if yours does and your amp has a PHONO input, use one or the other — never both.
+Is an expensive cartridge worth it on a cheap deck?
Up to a point. A better stylus profile reads more of the groove, and that improvement is audible even on a modest deck. But past roughly the price of the turntable itself you hit the wall: a wobbly platter and flexy tonearm will not let a fine stylus do its job.
+Are suitcase record players really that bad?
For casual listening they are fine, and we rate five of them here honestly. The catch is tracking force: many use a heavy ceramic cartridge pressing far harder than a standard magnetic one. That wears grooves faster. Play a record you love on one for years and you will hear it.
+What is wow and flutter, and what number is good?
It is how much the speed wobbles — wow is slow drift, flutter is fast. You hear it as pitch that will not sit still, most obviously on sustained piano. Under 0.10% is solid, under 0.05% is excellent. The best decks on this page measure 0.025%.
+How do you make money, and does it bias the rankings?
Affiliate commission when you buy through our links. Nobody can pay for a place on this page, and no brand sees a review before it publishes. All 64 products are ranked purely on measured bench score — that is also why some well-known names sit low on the list.
